Uniform & Team History
This is a recreation of a uniform from the 1941 Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League. A minor-league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, their roster included shortstop Lennie Merullo, a native of East Boston who would later play seven seasons in the big leagues. Merullo, who died in 2015, was a coach in the Oldtime Baseball Game from 1999 to 2010.
Oldtime Game History
This uniform was added to our collection in 2017 so that it could be worn by John Martin, a longtime videographer at NESN who was in the early stages of battling ALS. Martin chose an Angels uniform for no other reason than because for many years he was a coach in Boston’s South End Little League and his team was the Angels. The 2017 game being played as a fundraiser for Compassionate Care ALS in John’s honor, he arrived at St. Peter’s Field in style: Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez, who planned to pitch two innings to support John, picked up his old friend at his Newton home and drove him to Cambridge. This uniform continues to be worn in the Oldtime Baseball Game in memory of John, who died in 2018.
Owen Carlson, another longtime friend of John’s and himself a coach in the South End Little League, wore it is as a coach in our game in 2018 and ’19.
