Uniform & Team History
Bruce Petway was catcher for the Detroit Stars in 1920 when they were a charter member of the Negro National League. He also managed the team for four seasons. According to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, legend has it that in a 1910 exhibition game in Cuba Petway threw out Detroit Tigers great Ty Cobb trying to steal second base three times.
Oldtime Game History
Phil Perry, a graduate of Boston College High School and Georgetown University who has gone on to become a well-known football analyst at NBC Sports Boston, wore this uniform when he played in the 2024 Oldtime Baseball Game. Introduced to the game in 2009, it was first worn by Mike Gedman of the University of Massachusetts. Gedman’s father, Rich Gedman, played for the Boston Red Sox and was their catcher in the 1986 World Series.
