Boston native Eddie Pellagrini made his big-league debut with the Red Sox on April 22, 1946 and hit a home run off Washington Senators right-hander Sid Hudson in his first at-bat. He went on to play eight years in the big leagues, including time with the St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. He then switched gears and went into coaching, running the Boston College baseball program for 31 seasons. He came out of retirement to coach in the Oldtime Baseball Game from 2000 to ’02. Pelly died in 2006.
Oldtime Game History
Cambridge native Joe Murphy, just 15 at the time, wore this uniform when he was invited to play in the 2015 Oldtime Baseball game to honor the memory of his father, Brian Murphy, a former member of the Cambridge City Council and later assistant city manager who died on February 15, 2015. Brian Murphy was a longtime supporter of the Oldtime Baseball Game who each year would watch the game from behind home plate.
