Uniform & Team History

Ray Chapman, one of the best defensive shortstops of his era, is the only player in major-league history to be killed as a result of an in-game injury. Leading off the fifth inning of the Indians’ August 16, 1920 game against the Yankees at the Polo Grounds, Chapman was hit in the head by a pitch thrown by Carl Mays and died the next day.

Oldtime Game History

(Throwback uniforms were not added to the game until 1998. In the ’94 debut game Konecky wore a Durham Bulls uniform, which he owned.)
